Processing

Processing of the cord blood sample takes up to 4 hours and must be completed within 48 hours of collection, so it is critical that the cord blood sample be shipped to our laboratory within 24-36 hours of collection.

During processing, the red cell component of the umbilical cord blood is reduced. This isolates the plasma, which is the source of your child’s cord blood stem cells. The cord blood sample is tested for sterility, viability and stem cell count. The results of these tests are available upon request.
